Château de Beaucastel
Hommage à Jacques Perrin - 2022
Presentation
To affirm one’s individuality and stand by one’s convictions was the guiding philosophy of Jacques Perrin, a visionary and pioneer who left a lasting mark on the history of fine wines. A forerunner of organic farming as early as the nineteen sixties and later of biodynamics from nineteen seventy four onward, he moved against the current of his time to place nature and terroir at the heart of his work. His bold vision restored prestige to Mourvèdre, the ancestral grape variety of Châteauneuf du Pape, which has become the signature of the cuvée Hommage à Jacques Perrin. Created by the fifth generation of the Perrin Family, this cuvée powerfully expresses the legacy of a man deeply connected to the land and its origins. It embodies a wine of conviction, pure, natural and uncompromising, with a unique complexity where aromatic intensity, balance and elegance come together. A true interpretation of the Beaucastel terroir, Hommage à Jacques Perrin is the most authentic expression of a Grand Vin, endowed with remarkable depth and ageing potential.
The Vintage
The 2022 vintage experienced contrasting climatic hazards which allowed to offer good quality grapes and a very promising aromatic complexity, with however a heterogeneous volume depending on the plots. Winter and spring were particularly mild and very dry, with the months of January and May proving to be the driest since the start of the 20th century, with record temperatures in May and June. These conditions allowed to maintain an excellent sanitary state of the vines, thanks to a total absence of disease. The summer was then very sunny with high temperatures that presaged high potential in terms of alcohol, but saving rains in mid-August allowed the grapes to slowly continue to mature. The harvest thus began on August 19th in very good conditions and 11 days ahead of 2021. It was punctuated by a few rainfalls in September which did not alter the superb quality of the grapes but made it necessary to carry out a light sorting in the vineyard. We have worked our rosés with finesse, for elegant, fruity and low-alcohol wines. The reds were gently vinified with delicate extractions which reveal particularly balanced wines. The first tastings suggest a 2022 vintage full of promise, with complex and aromatic palates and great balance.
The Wine
In the northern part of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, Château de Beaucastel stretches over 110 hectares in a single continuous block, emblematic of the great terroirs of the region. The soils combine rolled pebbles on the surface with clay, sand and limestone at depth, offering remarkable richness. The old vines, cultivated organically for more than fifty years, sink their roots deep into the ground and express the full diversity of the thirteen grape varieties permitted by the appellation. In the cuvée Hommage à Jacques Perrin, the predominance of Mourvèdre at sixty percent combined with Grenache at twenty percent and Syrah at twenty percent gives the wine its identity and distinctive signature.
Tasting
The superb grape quality of the 2022 vintage offered ideal conditions for the cuvée Hommage à Jacques Perrin, the quintessence of Château de Beaucastel, to fully flourish. The wine displays a splendid deep and dense purple red colour, almost black. Profound, powerful and eminently refined, the nose reveals a sumptuous aromatic bouquet with notes of fully ripe fruit, violet, liquorice and noble spices. With spectacular complexity, the palate is a marvel of balance between the richness, depth and generosity typical of Hommage and an absolutely remarkable freshness for the vintage. The ninety year old vines bring the serenity of wisdom and the depth of age, with a silky texture and very supple tannins. An exceptional vintage of Hommage à Jacques Perrin, marked by the elegance of wisdom and the promise of age.
